Kate Middleton’s See-Through Dress Is Not For Sale

Once upon a time (actually in March 2002), a girl who did not know she would one day be a princess put on a see-through dress and sashayed her way down a runway in a fashion show at the University of St. Andrews. That girl was Kate Middleton, and her husband-to-be, Prince William, was sitting front row and whispered to a friend “Kate’s hot!” when she came down the runway. The rest, as they say, is history.
But for all the stories about how Kate and Wills are the prefect couple, and for all the speculation about what kind of queen Kate will be, it’s that dress that’s getting all the attention today. While its designer, Charlotte Todd, told the London Evening Standard that it only cost her £30 (about $50) and took a week to make, auction houses have estimated that the dress is currently worth £10,000 pounds, and could go for as much as £100,000 when Kate becomes queen. For those of you who don’t want to mess with a currency converter, that’s about $160,000 at current exchange.
So why is it so valuable? Per the Standard, “according to royal biographer Katie Nicholl, it was at a house party later that night that William made his first move on Kate — even though she had a boyfriend, Rupert Finch.”
But Todd vows that she won’t part with the dress, unless Kate herself asks her to.
“The dress is a part of fashion history — the moment William could first have fallen in love with Kate — and that makes me really proud,” she said. “I only made it as a skirt, but they pulled it up on Kate and she wore it as a dress.
